Hickman County, TN, has seen many changes in its local economy over the past several decades. The largest part of the economy is provided by government--mostly schools and local government employees.
The second largest category is unclassified--small entrepreneurs. Manufacturing still produces a significant part of the economy, although it has declined. Health care, conversely, is a growing industry. Although tourism is not broken out separately, it is made up of returns from Accommodation and Food Services and Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation. It runs around $12 million per year. Many people see tourism as an untapped industry as much of the private land is off limits to tourism.
